Volos plant - Cooperation on biodiversity protection with the University of Thessaly

Heracles cooperates with the University of Thessaly on a biodiversity inventory research study at the company's two quarries in Anavra and Agria, Magnesia.

The cooperation aims at recording and monitoring biodiversity and making concrete proposals that will form the basis for the development of the two mining areas rehabilitation plan and the enhancement of local biodiversity.

As of 2011, the scientific team of the Laboratory of Ecosystem Management and Biodiversity, Agriculture, Crop Production and Rural Environment Department of the university in cooperation with the National Agricultural Research Foundation (NAGREF) and the Agricultural University of Athens will assess existing flora and fauna at the quarries, and in a 500 meter zone around them.

The program includes:

  • Assessment of the biodiversity's condition in comparison with other regions without mining activity and proposal of ways to increase the number and abundance of species in the quarries.
  • Recommendations for safeguarding of any rare or endangered species found.

In the future, Heracles plans to utilize the learning from the program with the University of Thessaly and extend it to its other quarries, further raising its standards.
