Cement - Improving road safety using onboard GPS

Health & Safety, as an absolute priority is not limited to the employees but equally applies to the company's partners and subcontractors. Especially for road transportation, the company is making efforts to ensure safer behavioral practices among its transporters. Heracles decided to equip its silo trucks with GPS.

Lafarge places the safety of its employees and subcontractors at the heart of its preoccupations. The Group's objectives are to achieve a rate of zero fatal accidents and keep lost time injuries to a minimum. This particularly means a significant reduction in road accidents involving trucks of transporters working for the company.

In 2009, Lafarge in Greece decided to equip its silo trucks with GPS to improve deliveries. It is now possible to:

  • Locate vehicles,
  • Calculate the shortest and least dangerous routes,
  • Monitor driving time,
  • Identify speeding, etc.

In the first 6 months, the GPS system has led to a 97% reduction in speeding offenses and a 98% reduction in accidents.

2009 was a year with no lost time injuries and no medical injuries. Speed violation incidents fell from 14,000 in January down to 20 in December, a decrease of 99.85%.

This initiative has been accompanied by a comprehensive road safety program:

  • Communications and training campaigns,
  • 2,500 vehicle inspections per year,
  • Spot-checks on vehicles,
  • Obligation on all subcontracting transport companies to comply with the Group's health and safety policy.
