Acropolis accessible to all
At HERACLES Group we recognize the right of access of all people of all ages from around the world to the cultural heritage of our country. For this reason we proudly participated to the initiative of the Onassis Foundation in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and Sports to make the Acropolis accessible to all.
The Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports has as a priority to improve the accessibility and traffic of the monuments at the Acropolis Hill. By upgrading the services provided at the Acropolis, the Acropolis Hill becomes, for the first time, completely accessible, not only to people with disabilities, but also to citizens with mobility or other health problems, thus the experience of visiting this significant Greek monument is completely different and more "friendly" for everyone.
In this context, we undertook the project of shaping the corridors in the Acropolis rock with durable and "green" materials, making them completely accessible and safe.
The material chosen was Lafarge Special Concrete, Artevia® Stone. It is an advanced architectural solution that combines the advantages of concrete and the design of impressive materials for a unique result in texture, appearance and aesthetics.
The Special Concrete Artevia® Stone with a feeling of natural stone, gives a natural result that blends harmoniously with the environment. A unique characteristic of Artevia® Stone that made it imperative for this project, is the non-slip properties of the material. Thanks to these properties, the safety of visitors is immediately ensured, which was one of the main objectives of paving the routes. Finally, the high durability of the Special Concrete even in adverse weather conditions, allows the systematic continuation of maintenance and restoration of the monuments on the Acropolis Hill. This process requires the transportation of different heavy materials and marble that weight up to 10 tons, by heavy vehicles. So, it was really important that the corridors could support such an extensive pressure.
