HERACLES Group joins the European AURORA research project to develop a competitive CO2 capture technology in cement production
HERACLES Group is actively involved in shaping technological developments to reduce its environmental footprint. By participating in the HORIZON EUROPE framework programme, the Group will contribute to the development of applied research on key environmental issues.
AURORA project – Accelerated deployment of integrated CCUS chains based on solvent capture technology – is to be launched in January 2023 with a duration of 42 months. Universities of global standing, research centres and companies from Greece and abroad are joining forces to contribute to the development of a competitive carbon capture technology in three hard to abate industrial sectors: cement production, oil refining and metal recovery from industrial waste (https://ec.europa.eu/info/funding-tenders/opportunities/portal/screen/opportunities/topic-details/horizon-cl5-2022-d3-01-15).
HERACLES Group’ participation entails the installation and operation of a pilot CO2 capture unit in the cement plant in Agria, Volos. The total budget of the project is €16.6 million and that of HERACLES Group €1.3 million.
Mr Charalampos Kouris, Sustainability Director of HERACLES Group, said: "Heracles Group has a long tradition in innovation through systematic participation in both Greek and European research programmes. The purpose of the Group's participation in collaborative research initiatives is to track emerging technologies that can lead to a significant reduction in CO2 emissions, accelerate the transition to sustainable construction, while laying the foundation for decarbonization of the cement industry and other energy-intensive industries".
